I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and grew up in Cape Town, and spent much of that time sketching, writing and dreaming. Schoolwork and homework and anything related to formal study or conformity held very little interest for me, and it was only years later that I realized that while it appeared that I was drifting aimlessly, I was amassing priceless information that would eventually influence the way I evolved as an artist.

The Africart Collection began as a series of sketches with no real purpose in mind, but as the collection grew I realized that each piece seemed to reflect something unique about Africa. As the project expanded I realized that I didn’t want to portray Africa in the usual clichéd way that I had seen in countless curio stores and tourist webs. I wanted aspects of Africa to surface organically and give a much fuller insight into the many complex facets that make up this incredible continent; to reflect on the moments of peace, but not forget
