the struggle; to acknowledge the serious issues that beset every country on the continent, but not to negate the precious progress that has been made in winning some ground; to appreciate the constant struggles that have always existed for all races and probably always will, but not to lose hope that comes from survival and unity. Hence the contrasts of the butterflies and the masks, the wildlife and the tame, the tribal influence and the wonders and influence of the modern age.

The pieces that mean more to me than any of the others are the ones that contain the profiles of several kinds of people that make up Africa. No one single face is more important than the other, and each is necessary to complete the full picture. Enough said.

I never question inspiration. When an idea springs to mind, I try to obey it and fulfill its demands. There is a wonderful freedom that comes from working this way. I don’t have to explain the result, or justify it. Everything is open to interpretation, even the pieces that speak for
